31-40 - Digging For Gold

Their common heart:
1. They both had a big God: Jonathan (14:4-6); David (17:26, 36-37, 45-47).
2. They both were courageous: Jonathan (14:4-14); David (17:32).
3. They both were successful military commanders: Jonathan (13:3, 14:4-14); David (18:5-7, 13-16, 24-27, 30).
4. They both submitted to God and His anointed: Jonathan (19:4-5, 20:13,
23:15-18); David (24:5-7, 10, 26:9-11, 16, 23).
They were friends from their first meeting:
At their first meeting (17:57-18:1), Jonathan immediately realized that they were one in heart.
They committed themselves to each other:
1. Jonathan gave David his royal attire so that David would be at home in the presence of royalty (18:4).
2. Though Jonathan knew that David would succeed Saul as king and not him, he warned David that his father Saul was trying to kill him (19:2); and he defended David before his father (19:4-6).
3. Jonathan is wiling to do anything for David (20:4).
4. Jonathan and David made an oath of love toward each other (20:8, 14-17, 42). They both resolved to seek God's best for the other person—this is Christian friendship.
5. They both put the other first before themselves: Jonathan (23:15-18); David (II Sam. 1:25-27).
